OUR HISTORY
More than a hundred years ago we started off as Railway Ministry focusing on the people living at the small stations along the railway lines in those days.
During the course of history three important changes took place in the face of the ministry:
-
The church realised that the ministry will be more effective when it becomes an iriterdenominational ministry, as it was not only congregants of the DRC who lived at the Railway Stations. It is therefore important to understand that we do not try to promote a certain denomination to the marketplace — we proclaim the Kingdom of God.
-
Secondly, the ministry extended to include other sectors of the marketplace, like the seafarers coming ashore in Cape Town harbour, the fishing communities along the coastal region of the Cape Province, as well as Industry and Commerce in our cities and towns.
-
Thirdly, some years ago Industrial Ministry in SA was registered as a Non-profit.
THE THEOLOGY
Our Theology is based on the words of Jesus in His opening statement according to Luke 4: 18 when He started His ministry: “I came to set the captives free”.
- There are too many employers and employees in the marketplace who try to do their work with a mentality of captivity:
- I am a victim of apartheid, of affirmative action; of a unhappy past; of broken relations — or whatever.
- In this way the marketplace can so easily become a place of captivity, preventing people to live out their calling.
THE PHILOSOPHY
The marketplace is to the city what the heart is to the human body.
- Through these arteries flows the life of the city.
- If the heart is ill — the whole city suffers.
The Theory
Just like the heart of a human body, the marketplace consists out of four chambers:
- Commerce/industry
- Education
- Governance
- Agriculture
- Together these four chambers will pump life and prosperity to our communities when they are healthy.
- At this stage our ministry is focused on two chambers, namely: Commerce/Industry; and Agriculture.
- Our dream is to extend the ministry in the future to include the other two chambers also, namely Education and Governance.
THE PRACTICE
Our freelance spiritual workers visit places of work on a regular basis to:
- Build good relationships;
- Minister through Scripture-reading and prayer.
- Counselling those in need of emotional assistance when needed.
- Teaching basic Life Skills like separation of Iclentity, Restoring Relations; Empowering Leadership.
- We have an informal agreement with Bright Star Life Skills NPC to present their Life
- Skills Program to employers and employees in the This is a SAQ accredited program. (See attached information on the Bright Star NPC).
- We have the services of four SAQA accredited facilitators who received the training to present the Bright Star Life Skills (See attached curriculum).
- The establishing of Discipleship Groups to create spaces of belonging. We estimate that 60% of the workforce in George does not have a bond with a formal supportive faith community. Industrial Ministry might be the only supporting community they have.
- Leader mentoring programmes.
- At this stage Industrial Ministry in the Garden Route have currently 15 freelance spiritual workers available. They visit 45 businesses and by doing so they reach out to at least 320 people in their world of work weekly.
- In the agriculture sector on the farms in the vicinity of the Gwayang River we have 4 well-established discipleship groups going which meet weekly.
- On the farms in the Outeniqua district we have a well-established Life Skills Development program going, presented by a qualified Pastor in conjunction with the DRC congregation
- We also distribute Bibles in Afrikaans, English and Xhosa free to those who can’t afford their own.
